bedroom vaporizer for elderly mother

What is the best and safest vaporizer to put in my 87 year old mother's bedroom. Her rom is small, about 12x14. She has macular degeneration so cannot see well at all. She has been getting a lot of nose bleeds lately and I think iot may be because the furnace makes the air in the house so dry. Is steam better than cool mist? Is it worth the money to invest in an ultrasonic vaporizer for this purpose?

Thanks so much for your help.

best humidifier or vaporizer for bedroom
by: Lisa- site expert

Hi Noreen,
Yes, likely the bedroom is too dry and could use some moisture. I would not actually recommend a vaporizer. If she cannot see well, she could burn herself on the vaporizer because the steam has no cooling chamber and is very hot right out of the unit.
I'd recommend either a warm mist humidifier, like the Vick's warm mist humidifier, or an ultrasonic humidifier if you plan to use distilled water or a demineralization cartridge. You can use tap water in the Vick's warm mist humidifier because it boils it first to release steam into a cooling chamber. With an ultrasonic, the minerals from the water will go into the air creating a white dust if you use tap water, so only distilled water or tap water with a demineralization cartrige will work. Also, make sure to use either only on low so the room doesn't get too humid!

To your health,
