There are two main types of combination humidifier and air purifier units. The first is called an airwasher. This machine washes the air with water to clean it. The dirt, pollen, impurities collect on plastic plates, which you then wash off when needed or use a cleaning solution that will dissolve the particles.

The second is an actual air purifier humidifier with all the technology of top quality air purifiers, with a humidification function as well. Some offer purification with non-HEPA filters. These will only do a partial job of cleaning the air. Any top quality purifier should have a HEPA filter, if it uses a filter. These clean the air best, down to the smallest particles.

I haven’t found studies on the air cleaning rating and it likely isn’t as good as a HEPA air purifier. But if you don’t need the absolute purest air and just want cleaner air, this is good.
